About this kata
Introduces the downward block, rising block, lunge punch, knife-hand block and back stance. Funakoshi renamed Pinan to Heian ('peace and tranquility').
Origin
The Heian (Okinawan: Pinan) kata were created around 1905 by Anko Itosu, drawing on Kanku Dai and Bassai, to teach karate in Okinawan schools.
